Air India Receives 35 Aircraft next year. The flag carrier of India plans to add 35 new aircraft this year as the company prepares for the “consolidation and expansion”. In terms of flying to a greater number of international as well as domestic routes, according to its boss Ashwani Lohani has said in a statement.
Newest Airbus A320neo and another Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner will deliver to the airline begin this January 2017.
Emphasizing that the “battle has just begun” in terms of reactivation, Lohani said Air India needs to be competitive on tariffs with attractive schemes.
“I expect almost 35 new aircraft to join the Air India family during 2017 and they all have to be in full readiness to welcome, fill and fly them,” Air India CMD said in a New Year message to employees.
With the addition of the new aircraft, the group would have a fleet of more than 170 aircraft. Currently, the carrier has about 140 aircraft.
While Air India has 106 aircraft, its low-cost international arm of Air India Express has 23 aircraft. In addition, there are around 10 planed with Alliance Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the national carrier operating on regional routes. “We are going to travel to many new international destinations and new national destinations connect as well as part of the government’s regional connectivity push,” said Lohani, adding that filling more and flying more is the motto. Because 2017 is the year of consolidation and expansion.
For the first time in nearly a decade, Air India earned USD 1.05 billion dollar operating profit, aided primarily by lower fuel costs and increased passenger numbers.
According to Lohani, public perception about the airline is showing a trend of improvement, which is increasingly visible, “although marginally in all of our related performance indices.” However, raising concerns about misconduct among staff, he also urged employees not to do anything that could get in the way of restoring Air India to its original glory.
